Chamber and City Announce Plans for a New Sports Commission

Shane Moody, President and CEO of the Destin Area Chamber of Commerce, presents the Sports Commission concept to the Destin City Council during its Aug. 17 meeting.
Destin, FL, Aug. 18 - The Destin Area Chamber of Commerce and the City of Destin are pleased to announce plans for a joint Sports Commission. The new Commission is an initiative to attract tournaments and traveling leagues, particularly during slower seasons. This economic development initiative is designed to not only to put Destin’s sports facilities, such as the Morgan Sports Center, to good use, but also to draw people and revenue streams to Destin during the ‘off’ season.

“We see this as an excellent opportunity to partner with the City for the benefit of our local businesses, as well as for the visitors. This is a great way to showcase our beautiful facilities and the skills of those who manage and operate them,” announced the Chamber’s Vice Chair of Community and Economic Development Les Porterfield.

The Chamber will name and approve the 11-member Commission and appoint a chairperson by the end of the month. At this point in the planning process, the Destin Area Chamber hopes to see the Commission get right to work promoting a marketing strategy to create events and draw participants in the coming months.

Destin Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Shane Moody hopes to see events by early next year, adding that “…this is one of the more progressive initiatives we've had at the Destin Area Chamber… [The Sports Commission] is an exciting way for us to continue to build our world-class community.”
