Event Description:
NWFSC presents A Midsummer Night’s Dream
March 13-16, 2013
Northwest Florida State College will present its take on William Shakespeare’s most popular comedy A Midsummer Night’s Dream, appearing March 13 to 16 at 7:30 p.m. in the Sprint Theater at the college’s Mattie Kelly Fine and Performing Arts Center on the Niceville Campus. In this production, the cast will present the traditional Shakespearean text in a more modern 1920’s era setting.
“I am always amazed at the eagerness of our young students to master Shakespeare,” said NWFSC director Clint Mahle. “What amazes me more, however, is how successful they are at it. It shows a tremendous dedication.” The fifteen-member cast, which has been rehearsing four nights a week since mid-January, includes a combination of local theater veterans and students from around the area.
Tickets are available now by calling the Mattie Kelly Arts Center Box Office at (850) 729-600 or online at www.mattiekellyartscenter.org and are $15 for adults, $10 for youth ages 18 and younger. NWFSC students may obtain one free ticket per student ID in person from the Box Office.
A Midsummers Night’s Dream portrays the adventures of four young lovers who run away into the forest to escape undesired arranged marriages and a group of amateur actors preparing a play for the Duke’s upcoming wedding, and their interactions with woodland fairies and a duke and duchess. The young lovers will be played by Rhianna Bergquist of Shalimar as Helena, Naomi Campagne of Crestview as Hermia, Zachary Phillips of Niceville as Demetrius, and Sivu Schlegel of Niceville as Lysander.
The troupe of actors is made up of Ben Olson of Fort Walton Beach as Quince, John McCormack of DeFuniak Springs as Bottom, Sheila Johnson of Crestview as Snout, and Nicholas Tyler Corbin as Flute, Ron Altman as Starvling¬¬ and Danny Thomas as Snug – all of Niceville.
Spencer Mailes of Niceville won the role of Puck – the mischievous fairy who complicates life for all those in the forest. The fairy king Oberon and queen Titania will be played by Brett Huston and Katy Colson, both of Niceville. Rounding out the cast are Megan Rambo of Niceville playing Hippolyta, the soon to be bride of the Duke Theseus, played by Daniel Sindelar of Fort Walton Beach.
The Sprint Theater is the smaller of the two stages at the college's Mattie Kelly Fine and Performing Arts Center. The NWFSC theatrical version of A Midsummers Night's Dream will be staged the same month as the Northwest Florida Ballet performs the dance version of the Shakespeare comedy, set to the music of Felix Mendelssohn, on March 9 and 10 in the center's mainstage theater. “The two presentations are entirely different takes on the Shakespeare comedy – so it’s a great opportunity for students and the public to see both and really appreciate the genius of this masterwork,” said Mahle.
