Mattie Kelly Art Center Galleries at Northwest Florida State College is pleased to announce our fall exhibitions from the College’s esteemed permanent collection.

(See photo on right) The Delightful Mount. 17 ½ x 13 ½ inches. Woodblock print on paper. Salvador Dalí, Generous gift of Dottie Blacker to the Northwest Florida State College Permanent Collection.
Salvador Dalí, The Divine Comedy: In 1950, the Italian government commissioned the iconic surrealist artist Dalí to illustrate Dante Alighieri's early 14th-century masterpiece, The Divine Comedy, to celebrate the 700th anniversary of this renowned historical literature.  Between 1951 and 1960, Dalí created 34 watercolors depicting Inferno (Hell), 33 Purgatorio (Purgatory,) and 33 Paradiso (Paradise.) Three thousand six hundred individual woodblocks were carved to translate the original watercolors into prints; a single, hand-carved block represents each color or line in these works.  All 100 prints are on display in the McIlroy Gallery.
Niceville Shore. 17 x 23 inches. Casein paint on paper. n.d. Emil Holzhauer.
Holzhauer in the Emerald Coast showcases paintings by Emil Holzhauer of Valparaiso, Niceville, Ft. Walton Beach, Pensacola, and Destin, that Holzhauer made when he lived in Niceville, Florida between 1953 and 1986. In 1909, Holzhauer became a student of Robert Henri, a leading exponent of the Ashcan movement, in New York. Much of Holzhauer's work is characteristic of the Ashcan School, which advocated painting ordinary subject matter, directly from life, with freedom and spontaneity. Northwest Florida State College has been preserving the legacy of Holzhauer since 1967. See the show in the elegant Holzhauer Gallery.
